Rummy Comparison: Repair Cost Versus Completion Distance

Two rummy plans can be equally close to completion but very different in quality. Completion distance counts missing cards or steps. Repair cost asks what happens to the rest of the hand if the plan does not work. Comparing both prevents a nearly finished group from receiving too much attention.
A plan with one missing card has a short completion distance, but it may use two cards that could support a stronger group elsewhere. Another plan may be two steps away and still be better if it accepts several useful draws and leaves the remaining cards easy to reorganize. Distance is a useful starting point, not a final verdict.
To estimate repair cost, temporarily remove the cards committed to the plan. Look at the remainder and ask how many groups are still possible, which card becomes expensive, and whether a new plan can be formed without disrupting everything. If removing the plan leaves a coherent hand, its repair cost is low. If it leaves several stranded cards, continuing may be justified only with a clear deadline.
Compare plans on three lines: distance, available improvements, and repair cost. Avoid exact odds unless your information supports them. “One exact completion and high repair cost” is a useful description. So is “two possible improvements and low repair cost.” These categories support decisions without pretending to know every unseen card.
The comparison changes over time. Early in a hand, a plan with moderate repair cost may deserve attention while information develops. Later, the same plan can become unacceptable if it has not improved and the hand is carrying penalty. Recalculate after a meaningful discard, exposed meld, or rule-relevant event.
Practice with sample hands by choosing one close plan and one flexible plan. Build each on a separate line and identify what remains. Then write the draw that would make the close plan worthwhile and the draw that would rescue the flexible plan. This exercise teaches you to see a hand as a system rather than a collection of isolated groups.
Completion distance helps you notice opportunity. Repair cost helps you control commitment. Together they create a more balanced way to judge an unfinished group.
You can also use the comparison when reviewing discards. A discard that reduces completion distance for one group may sharply increase repair cost elsewhere. Looking at the whole hand keeps a locally attractive move from appearing automatically correct. Use this comparison before committing.
