A fixed discard rule might say “release the highest unconnected card first.” A flexible heuristic might say “release the card with the weakest current role.” The fixed rule is easy to remember; the heuristic can respond to context. Understanding the trade-off helps you build a routine that is both fast and accurate.
Fixed rules are useful for beginners and for obvious situations. They reduce hesitation and can protect against common mistakes, such as keeping several isolated high cards while chasing a distant route. A rule also gives you a baseline for review. If you break it, you can explain why.
The weakness is overgeneralization. A high card may be part of the only viable sequence, while a low card may be completely isolated. A rule that ignores required sequences, jokers, table information, or scoring can produce a clean-looking but poor discard. The more unusual the hand, the more important a context check becomes.
Flexible heuristics start with a principle and then inspect the hand. Consider legality, completion potential, penalty cost, and the number of realistic future exits. This method handles exceptions better, but it demands attention. Under time pressure, an undefined heuristic can become a vague feeling.
Combine the approaches with a two-stage process. Apply a fixed rule to create two or three candidate discards. Then use a short context check to choose among them. Ask whether any candidate is needed for a required sequence, whether another card has fewer realistic roles, and what the next turn would look like after each choice.
Over time, revise the rule only when a repeated review shows a clear pattern. Do not change it because one unusual hand lost. A good system provides a dependable default and a deliberate way to handle exceptions. That balance makes decisions quicker without pretending that every hand is the same. Test a rule in no-stakes hands before applying it under pressure. Record situations where it produced a candidate needing an exception, then refine the context questions rather than adding many new rules. A small system is easier to remember, explain, and improve. The aim is dependable decision quality, not the appearance of certainty. A heuristic should narrow the choice, not pretend to calculate an exact answer. Keep room for rules, visible information, and the structure of the current hand. That is where exceptions belong. When the hand clearly contradicts the default, state the exception in one sentence. That preserves accountability and gives you something to review later. A flexible rule is still a rule when its exceptions are visible and limited.
