The first sorting pass in rummy does not need to produce a perfect arrangement. It only needs to show where the hand has density and where it has gaps. Suit distribution is a useful starting lens because it tells you which cards naturally belong together before rank connections distract you.

Count the cards in each suit and mark any nearby ranks within those groups. A suit with three connected cards may offer a clear sequence route. A suit with two separated cards may be less promising, even if the cards have attractive individual values. Another suit may contain a pair that supports a set. These observations create a map rather than a final decision.

Do not assume the suit with the most cards is automatically your main project. Three cards can be awkwardly spaced, while two cards may form a strong bridge. Look at both quantity and proximity. Also note whether a potential route needs one card, two cards, or a joker. The plan that requires fewer precise repairs is often easier to maintain.

After mapping suits, identify a safe discard candidate outside your strongest structures. Avoid breaking a group merely to make the layout look tidy. The purpose of sorting is to improve decisions, not to force every card into a neat column. Keep a flexible card visible when it connects multiple realistic routes.

Recheck distribution after each draw. A single card can change the balance: it may turn a weak suit into a sequence project or make a previously attractive pair redundant. Do not continue defending an early plan just because you spent time organizing it. Ask whether the new distribution makes another route more efficient.

This approach is especially helpful for new players because it separates observation from commitment. First see where the hand has connections. Then compare the repair cost of those connections. Only after that should you decide which cards deserve protection. Suit distribution cannot predict the next draw, but it can stop a scattered hand from feeling like a collection of unrelated cards and give each turn a clear question: which structure is becoming more practical? You can make the process clearer by giving each possible route a simple label: strong, repairable, or speculative. Strong means the cards already connect well. Repairable means one ordinary draw could improve them. Speculative means the route depends on several precise events. These labels are not mathematical probabilities, but they make the comparison visible. Protect strong routes first, keep one repairable route when it is cheap, and be willing to release a speculative route when the hand gains a better structure.
