Sorting a rummy hand quickly can feel like progress, but speed is not the same as accuracy. A player who arranges cards in seconds may still overlook a duplicate, miscount a group, or assume that a visually neat layout is legal. Counting and sorting are related tasks, yet they solve different problems and should be compared by purpose.

Sorting is mainly about structure. It groups cards by suit, rank, connection, or intended meld so that possible routes become visible. Good sorting reduces search time during a turn. Its weakness is that a tidy layout can hide an incorrect assumption. A pair may be displayed beside a sequence even though the same card cannot serve both groups at once.

Counting is mainly about verification. It confirms the number of cards in hand, the size of a proposed group, the points attached to loose cards, and the cards still needed for a valid declaration. Counting takes a little longer, especially when a hand is being rearranged, but it catches errors that visual grouping can conceal.

Use speed when the task is reversible. At the beginning of a hand, a quick first sort can show broad possibilities without demanding a final plan. Use accuracy when the decision becomes costly. Before discarding, declaring, or committing to a narrow draw, count the hand and check that every card has one clear role. A ten-second verification can prevent a much longer recovery.

A practical routine has three passes. In the first pass, place cards into rough clusters and do not judge them. In the second, count the cards in each proposed sequence or set and identify overlaps. In the third, total the loose cards or high-point cards and choose a candidate discard. The first pass is fast; the second and third are deliberately careful.

The right balance also depends on the table timer. Under time pressure, use a compact counting rule: confirm the hand size, the required pure or natural group, and the legality of the intended move. You do not need to recalculate every theoretical route. In a practice hand, slow down and inspect the full structure so that accuracy becomes automatic later. Speed is valuable when it preserves clarity; accuracy is essential when an error cannot be easily undone.

Players can measure the balance during practice by timing the first sort and then checking the number of corrections required. A slightly slower routine with fewer corrections may be more efficient overall. The aim is dependable decisions, not a record-breaking arrangement time.
