Rummy Comparison: Counting Routes Versus Counting Cards

Players often count cards when they need to understand a rummy hand, but a card count alone can hide the difference between strong and weak plans. Counting routes adds another layer. A card count asks how many cards are in a group or how many cards are missing. A route count asks how many distinct ways the hand could improve without rebuilding everything.
Suppose a loose card can join two neighboring sequence plans. Counting cards might show two companions. Counting routes may show that both companions lead to the same narrow finish, or that each opens a different continuation. The second view is useful because a hand with one completion route can be more fragile than a hand with two independent routes, even when both appear equally close.
Start with a simple inventory. For each unfinished group, write the cards already present and the missing cards that would make a legal group under your table rules. Then combine overlapping possibilities. If two groups rely on the same missing card, count that as shared dependence rather than as two fully separate routes. This prevents double-counting optimism.
Route counting is especially helpful when choosing between a nearly finished group and a flexible partial group. The nearly finished group may need one exact card. The flexible group may need two different cards, but either can lead to a usable structure. Neither is automatically best. Compare how many future turns each plan can survive and what happens if the preferred draw does not arrive.
Card counting remains valuable for penalty control and hand size. A high-point loose card may deserve attention even when it has a route. Route counting should not erase practical risk. Use both measures: cards describe immediate material, while routes describe possible repair paths.
Keep the count approximate. The purpose is to identify dependence, not to claim exact odds from incomplete information. Mark a route as strong, narrow, or shared. During review, ask whether your route count included only legal groups and whether you ignored a route after the table changed.
The best comparison is usually a small one. Pick two candidate plans, list their missing cards, mark shared dependencies, and note the penalty if neither improves. This takes less time than trying to map every possible hand. It also makes your reasoning visible enough to improve after the round.
Be careful not to count the same route twice because it can be described with different words. “A sequence through the six” and “a run using the six” may be one route, not two. Define the final legal group first, then count distinct ways to reach it.
