A simple opening plan protects one clear group and releases the weakest card. A maximum-flexibility plan preserves several pairs and connectors while waiting for more information. Neither is automatically superior. The choice depends on rules, time, penalty, and how easily the hand can recover.

Simplicity reduces mental load. It can help when the table is fast or the opening hand contains a verified group. It also creates a clear discard target. Its danger is premature commitment: if the protected group depends on one exact card, the apparently simple plan may become expensive.

Flexibility keeps options open. It is useful when several cards connect in different directions and the next draw can clarify the hand. Its danger is clutter. Holding every possible route may leave no room to reduce high points or complete a required sequence.

Compare the plans after one ordinary miss. For the simple plan, can you release a card and continue? For the flexible plan, can you identify a priority and a first discard? If one plan has no answer, its flexibility is only theoretical. Also compare the number of turns needed before commitment becomes necessary.

Use a rule-based tie breaker. Protect a required legal structure, then reduce costly leftovers, then preserve the broader route. If rules are uncertain, pause and verify them rather than optimizing an arrangement that may not count.

In practice, alternate the approaches with sample hands. Review not which opening won, but which one produced the clearest next decision. Strong play is often a controlled compromise: one stable anchor plus one adaptable route. Match the style to attention and timing. Set a review point for either approach. If a flexible plan has no priority after another turn, simplify it; if a simple plan loses its fallback, open a second route. Record which style produced a clearer next action rather than declaring one style universally best.
