A backup plan is a second route to use if the primary route stops improving. It need not be equally attractive; it needs to preserve a reasonable chance of a valid hand while limiting damage.
Usually one backup is enough. Too many alternatives create confusion. Choose a route that shares useful cards with the primary plan or leaves a cleaner remainder. Set a review point after a certain number of unhelpful draws or when a required structure becomes harder to complete.
A backup can be too safe if it avoids risk but offers no realistic path to completion. Count believable improvements and decisions remaining. The best plan is visible, limited, and easy to explain. Review it calmly and adapt it to the exact rules of the table.
