What does “connected” mean in rummy?

A card is connected when it has a credible path into a valid sequence or group. Sharing a suit with another card is only the beginning. A suited five beside a six has a clearer connection than a suited five held alone, but both still need a workable completion and a sensible place in the final hand.

Is a pair automatically connected?

No. Two cards of the same rank can be a group candidate, but the group may require a third card of a different suit. The pair can also be useful as part of separate suit-based routes if the ranks allow it. Evaluate the pair alongside the rest of the hand instead of giving it a permanent “keep” label.

How many links should a card have?

There is no universal number. A card with one immediate neighbor may still be useful if the route has several alternatives. A card with two visible neighbors can remain weak if both routes depend on the same rare card or on a joker you need elsewhere. Count quality and recovery options, not only quantity.

Does a joker make every card connected?

A joker expands possibilities, but it does not remove planning costs. Assigning a joker to one route may prevent it from supporting a pure sequence or a more urgent gap. A card supported only by a joker should be marked as dependent, so you remember that the route is not fully natural.

When should I release a connected card?

Release it when the route has become less useful than another route, when its completion is too narrow, or when holding it creates an expensive remainder. The decision should include timing. A card that is reasonable early may become a liability late if no supporting draw has appeared.

What is the simplest test?

Remove the card mentally and ask whether the hand becomes harder to organize. Then return it and ask what exact card would improve its best route. If you cannot name a realistic improvement, the connection may be imagined rather than practical. This test keeps sorting honest without requiring complicated calculations.

Connection also has a confidence level. Mark a card as confirmed when it is already in a valid meld, probable when it has several natural links, and speculative when it depends on a narrow draw. Confidence labels make later review easier. They let you change a card’s role without feeling that you contradicted yourself: new information has simply changed the strength of the route.
