Rummy Guide: Evaluate a Hand by Its Available Exits

An exit option is a reasonable action you can take when a current plan stops working. It may be a discard that reduces points, a switch to another sequence, or a way to preserve a useful connector while abandoning a narrow idea. Counting exits makes a hand easier to evaluate.
Begin by naming your current plan in one sentence. For example, you might be waiting for a neighboring rank to extend a sequence. Now list what you could do after a miss. Could you release the waiting card? Does that leave a second group intact? Would the discard create a new route, or merely move the problem to another card?
A hand with several exits is not automatically strong. Some exits may be expensive or depend on a card that is unlikely to help. Classify each one as clean, costly, or uncertain. A clean exit lowers the hand’s burden without damaging another group. A costly exit gives up useful structure or leaves high points behind. An uncertain exit needs more information before it can be trusted.
The exercise is most useful before a draw, not after a bad result. If you already know what you will do after several possible outcomes, the timer is less stressful. You also reduce the temptation to keep a failing plan simply because you have invested time in it.
Use exits as a comparison tool. If one candidate discard leaves three reasonable futures and another leaves only one, the first may deserve priority even when the second appears to make a prettier group. The right question is not “Which hand looks finished now?” but “Which hand can continue making good decisions?”
During practice, record the number and quality of exits at the middle of a hand. Review whether the exits were genuine or imagined. Over time, you will become better at distinguishing flexible structure from a collection of hopeful possibilities. That skill helps both your strategy and your composure. Exits can be visible in the cards you already hold. A low-point singleton may be a clean exit even if it has no exciting future. A connector shared by two groups may be a poor exit because releasing it destroys more than one route. Look for the action that solves the largest problem with the smallest new dependency.
Do not count an exit merely because the interface permits it. A move is useful only if it leaves a hand you understand and can continue to review. Practical exits are part of hand strength, not an afterthought.
