Two cards that sit close together in one suit can be valuable because more than one rank may complete them. For example, a five and six of the same suit could connect to a four or seven, depending on the rules. These connectors are not sequences yet, but recognizing their flexibility helps guide draws and discards.

Sort the hand by suit and identify pairs with useful spacing. Middle ranks often have two immediate neighbors, while an ace or king may have fewer legal directions. Do not automatically keep every close pair. Compare it with the rest of the hand: a pair that blocks a stronger pure sequence or carries high points may need a different treatment.

When two connectors compete, prefer the one with more realistic completion paths. Look at the discard pile for evidence that a needed rank is still available, while remembering that unseen cards remain uncertain. Keep a connector only while the potential benefit justifies the cards you are holding around it.

Jokers can change the comparison. If one connector can become a valid sequence without a joker and another requires a joker, the natural route may be more useful for meeting a pure-sequence requirement. Once that requirement is secure, a joker can be assigned where it reduces the most risk.

Avoid counting a card in two planned groups. Write or mentally mark each card’s current role, then reassess after every draw. A flexible connector is a resource, not a guarantee. The best decision may eventually be to break it when the hand develops a stronger arrangement or when the needed cards stop appearing.

This way of thinking turns sequence building into a comparison of options rather than a hunt for one lucky card. It also makes discards easier to explain: retain the connector with better flexibility, lower point exposure, and a clearer path to a valid hand. The same comparison works when a connector is tempting you to hold an awkward card. Ask how many turns you can reasonably wait and what you will discard if the needed rank fails to arrive. If the answer is unclear, create a fallback group now. A hand with one promising pair and several unconnected high cards needs a different response from a hand with two pairs and a secure pure sequence. Naming the fallback prevents a hopeful connection from consuming the entire decision process. A fallback gives the connector a useful limit instead of letting hope decide indefinitely.
