Sequence planning becomes clearer when you count how many neighboring cards could improve a group. The count is not an exact probability because cards may already be held or visible, but it gives a practical measure of flexibility.

Suppose two cards sit close together in the same suit. They may have one missing neighbor that completes a short sequence, or they may allow a longer sequence in two directions. Look at both ends and list the ranks that would create a legal continuation. A middle pair often has more directions than an edge pair. This makes it more flexible, provided the needed cards have not already disappeared from the useful pool.

Do not count every theoretical card equally. A neighbor that would force you to break a confirmed pure sequence has little practical value. A card that completes a group but leaves a high singleton may also be less helpful than the raw count suggests. After counting neighbors, check the whole hand and the resulting discard.

Timing matters. Early in a hand, a flexible pair can deserve protection because it can develop in several ways. Late in a hand, even a pair with two possible neighbors may be too slow. Set a deadline for narrow combinations and shorten it as the number of turns falls. Flexibility is useful only while there is time to use it.

Jokers change the calculation but should not erase it. A joker can cover one missing position, yet the remaining natural structure still needs to be valid under the format. Treat the joker as a backup route, not proof that every pair is worth keeping.

Use the neighbor count when comparing two similar cards. Prefer the combination with more realistic continuations, lower penalty exposure, and a cleaner discard. If the counts are close, preserve the plan that tells opponents less or keeps a separate requirement secure. This simple method replaces vague optimism with a repeatable comparison and helps keep sequence building connected to the hand’s overall structure. When two combinations have the same number of neighbors, compare their consequences. One may preserve a confirmed group, while the other may require breaking a useful card. Prefer the route that keeps the hand legal and leaves a clear discard. A small count is helpful, but it belongs inside a broader structural check.
