A rummy hand can contain several groups and still be far from ready. Counting groups alone hides the work left to do. A clearer method is to list unresolved tasks for each candidate plan: required sequences, missing connectors, unsupported leftovers, and rule checks. The plan with fewer tasks is not automatically best, but the comparison is more honest.

Write each plan as an end state. For instance, “protect the pure sequence, complete the set, and resolve two singles” is easier to evaluate than “keep the left side.” Mark which tasks are already satisfied and which need future cards. If a card can serve two tasks, note that carefully; using it in one group may remove it from the other.

Next classify tasks by difficulty. A broad task can be completed by several useful cards. A narrow task depends on one exact rank or a fragile arrangement. A legal requirement deserves special priority because a hand that lacks it cannot be declared, even if its point total looks low. This classification prevents a long list of easy possibilities from outweighing one essential bottleneck.

Compare candidate plans at the same moment. Do not give one plan the benefit of a future draw while judging another by its current shape. For each, ask what a neutral draw would leave you with and which task would become the next discard priority. The more manageable plan often has a better recovery path even when it has one additional unresolved task.

Recount after meaningful changes. A joker can remove one task while creating a role question. An opponent meld can make a route less attractive. A new card can combine two tasks or reveal that a previous group was misread. Treat the count as a snapshot, not a permanent score.

This method also improves post-game review. Identify the turn when the unresolved-task count rose sharply. Did you keep a card without a clear job? Did you break a group before protecting a required sequence? Did you mistake a broad possibility for a completed task? Each answer points to a practice exercise.

The purpose is not to reduce rummy to arithmetic. It is to make hidden work visible. When you compare plans by what remains unresolved, you can choose a hand shape that is both legally sound and realistically recoverable.

The count is most useful when it leads to one clear next action, such as protecting a requirement or releasing an unsupported card.
