Rummy FAQ: What Is a Route Dependency?

A route dependency is a condition that must be met before a rummy plan can become useful. A sequence that needs one missing middle card has one obvious dependency. A plan that needs two different ranks, a particular suit, and a joker assignment has several. Counting dependencies helps explain why two hands with the same number of cards in partial groups can have very different practical strength.
To find dependencies, choose one proposed grouping and ask what must happen next. Mark every missing card, rule condition, or reorganization that the route requires. Suppose you hold five and seven of hearts and want a sequence. The route depends on a six of hearts. If you also need to move an eight from another group before the sequence can be used, the route has an additional structural dependency. Do not count the same missing card twice; count distinct requirements.
Dependencies are not automatically bad. A single, visible dependency may be a clean plan. The warning sign is a route that looks attractive only because several uncertain steps are being mentally compressed into one. Players often say “I only need one more card” when the card would also force a second rearrangement or leave an essential group incomplete. Naming each step makes the real cost clearer.
Compare routes by dependency quality, not only quantity. A needed card may be available in several suits or ranks, while another route may depend on one exact card. A dependency supported by an observed discard is different from one based solely on a guess. A dependency that preserves a backup plan is safer than one that uses every flexible card in the hand.
Before drawing, ask three questions: What exact condition am I waiting for? What will I do if it does not arrive soon? Which card can I release without damaging another route? If you cannot answer the second question, the plan may be a hope rather than a plan. This check is especially useful near the end of a hand, when there is less time to recover from a narrow route. Route dependency is simply a language for making hidden conditions visible. You can also compare dependencies by how reversible they are. A route may need a card, but abandoning it later may leave the rest of the hand untouched. Another route may need the same number of cards while forcing you to break a stable group if it fails. The second route has a higher practical dependency because failure causes more damage. Include this recovery effect in your notes. In practice, prefer routes whose requirements are clear, whose useful cards overlap with another plan, and whose failure does not leave an impossible declaration. This keeps dependency counting connected to actual play.
